The facts can’t be contested. Every year there are over four hundred thousand casualties of smoking a year in the United States alone. This is almost a hundred times more than died at the WTC attack and ten times more than the US has lost during the 6-year war with terrorism. The moment a smoker lits his or her cigarette, he or she inhales almost five thousand dangerous chemicals. 69 of those compounds are known to be carcinogenic. The risk is practical - over three quarters of lung cancer fatalities in the US is the direct effect of smoking. Respiratory problems are only a peak of an iceberg. Smoking is also known for increasing the chance of a stroke and heart diseases even if you’re only a second-hand smoker. It gets worse if one has been exposed to the cigarettes smoke when one was a child. Then, there is a good chance of developing severe asthma and allergies as well as nose, throat and ear infections. While these conditions do not normally kill, they may change a happy life into a nightmare - only because parents wanted to take a puff from time to time.

Although Health Canada has not tested the VitaCig, Cook said that such products are no less harmful than any regular brand. "We do tests right now, analysis on the tobacco products, on cigarettes, and what we do is measure the toxic emissions," he said. "We have no evidence that these products are any different at this point." He also warned against any claims stating the VitaCig brand is healthy, saying "there's a law against making misleading claims about a product." Quebecers will be able to try the new cigarettes for themselves at one of 2,000 stores across the province, and it could soon reach more locations outside the province. Smoker Heidi Miller tried the VitaCig and said it does have less of an odour than her regular brand, although she was highly skeptical of the added ingredients. In 1974 they released their second album, the critically acclaimed Mirage on which Latimer showed he was adept on flute also. Although failing to chart at home, it gained success on the U.S. west coast, prompting a three month tour there. The instrumental, orchestrated concept album The Snow Goose 1975, inspired by the Paul Gallico short story of the same name, was the breakthrough which brought cheap camel cigarettes wider attention. Gallico, who loathed smoking, thought the band were related to the cigarette brand and threatened to take legal action. Camel avoided this by adding the prefix 'Music inspired by...' to the album's cover. cigarettes emit 4000 toxic substances, according to (Switzerland's) Federal Office of Public Health (1994, p. 1). Klaassen and Wong (1993) write in their article on radiation in the the Encyclopaidia Britannica: "The largest non-occupational radiation sources are tobacco smoke for smokers and indoor radon gas for the nonsmoking population" (vol. 25, p. 925). Martell (1982) writes in a letter published in the New England Jounal of Medicine: "Indoor radon decay products that pass from room air through burning cigarettes into mainstream smoke are present in large, insoluble smoke particles that are selectively deposited at bifurcations. Thus, the smoker receives alpha radiation at bronchial bifurcations from three souces: from indoor radon progeny inhaled between cigarettes, from 214Po [polonium214] in mainstream smoke particles, and from 210Po[polonium-210] that grows into 210Pb [lead-210]-enriched particles that persist at bifureations. I estimate that the cumulative alpha dose at the bifureations of smokers who die oflung cancer is about 80 rad (1600 rem)-a dose sufficient to induce malignant transformation by alpha interactions with basal cells"(p.310). Evens (1993) writes in an article entitled "Cigarette smoke = radiation hazard": "In 1 year a smoker of 1 to 2 packs per day will irradiate portions of his or her bronchial epithelium with about 8 to 9 rem. This dose can be contrasted with that from a standard chest x-ray film of about 0.03 rem. Thus, the average smoker absorbs the equivalent of the dosages from 250 to 300 chest x-ray films per year" (p. 464). Strangely enough, the radioactivity of Cigarettes smoke is rarely mentioned in the majority of the articles dealing with the toxicity of this product. Abelin (1993), who provides a list of the different forms of cancer provoked by cigarettes, also notes that low-tar cigarettes have a lower risk factor than normal cigarettes.

STAFF at Evesham Community Hospital are too scared to ask members of the public to stub out their cigarettes because of a fear of abuse, it was claimed this week. Matron Sue Baker said nurses are too afraid to enforce no-smoking signs around the hospital which ban smoking in the hospital grounds as well as in buildings. "We are following a government white paper on health which committed to a non-smoking NHS by the end of 2006," she explained. "We are asking people to give up smoking anywhere in the grounds. advertisement "We have signs up around the building and posters around the grounds but the problem is people just follow the signs to the department they need and might not know the details of our no-smoking policy." Mrs Baker said although only a small number of people are smoking in hospital buildings, there are problems with people smoking on their approach to the hospital. "We have people getting out of their cars and lighting up a last cigarette before they come in," she added. "They keep smoking right up to the doors and when staff ask them not to smoke they get all kinds of abuse. "They use the f-word and anything else to hand and there have been cases of people approaching staff in an aggressive manner." Mrs Baker revealed smoking staff were unhappy with the restrictions and a number of nurses had turned to anti-smoking measures offered by dedicated staff member Julia North.

Illegal activities take place all the time in this country. And not sort-of crimes but real, violent crimes. One would think that we as a society would focus our efforts at preventing these crimes. Still, every day there are millions of law abiding Americans who are persecuted and pushed farther and farther to the fringes of society: smokers. Now, I don't smoke. I think the tobacco companies have misled people. I think second hand smoke may be a health issue. In spite of all this, smoking is legal, and whether or not a person smokes is a decision they are free to make. To many, cigarettes are the great evil to be purged. In the X-Files, the mysterious, sinister nemesis is referred to simply as "the smoking man," as if this trait alone were enough to assure us of his evilness. To these people, around every corner is another subliminal message placed by big tobacco to get four year olds to smoke. Most recently, health advocates in Sacramento pushed for smoking to be a criteria in movie ratings. A movie character enjoying a cigarette is lumped in with the murderer, topless actress and foul language. Surely no second hand smoke can pass from George Clooney's Marlboro's to the unsuspecting movie viewer. This is not an issue of health, it is an issue of vilification. Smokers are the modern day lepers, pushed to back sections of restaurants and dingy designated areas of office buildings. Right here in Maryland the most egregious example of smokers' rights violations almost came to be. The law passed, but vetoed by the county executive in Montgomery County, outlawed smoking, even in your own home, if the smoke bothers a neighbor. The implications of this law are far over reaching. If you live in an apartment and passersby in the hallway merely notice the presence of cigarettes or other tobacco, there would be legal penalties. Again, there is no health issue involved. An accuser only has to demonstrate annoyance at the presence of cigarettes. A tenant of a legally-owned dwelling attempting to use a completely legal substance could be committing a crime.
